Agde, Mediterranean sea and sun in an ancient market town

Agde is located on the river Herault, 4km from the Mediterranean. Known as the 'Black Pearl of the Mediterranean' because of its distinctive black basalt used in the local architecture this is reputedly the second oldest city in France. The market has been likened to Fortnum and Masons; oysters are cheaper than baked beans. Stroll by restaurant until one catches your eye or develop your cooking skills with all the local produce. What to see and do

Stroll through the historic centre of Agde following the tourist trail. Visit the 11th century Cathedral. Follow the ancient walls built on Greek foundations. Visit the extensive folk museum. Walk along Paul Riquet's Canal du Midi or take a boat trip. Or simply enjoy wandering through the higgledy-piggledy streets nibbling on a baguette. Agde's thriving produce market is on Thursday mornings. There are regular concerts in the Cathedral. The river jousting is not to be missed. Throughout the summer season there are many special events and the Syndicat d`Initiative will advise you on the weekly program. With numerous restaurants and bars you are spoilt for choice. You can sit in the sun on the riverbank with your morning coffee, looking forward to elegant French cuisine in the evening; take advantage of the local produce for example oysters, fresh tuna, garlic, olives and wine are all here for you.

The Beaches

With seven miles of beaches within easy reach of town there is something for everyone. Rouchelongue is a perfect family beach with golden sands, warm shallow sea and Mediterranean sun. La Mole is the fashionable bathing spot, a favorite with teenagers. La Conque is one of our own favourites this is a volcanic crater with basalt shingle instead of sand and great snorkelling following a buoyed course. Cap d`Agde is a modern resort with a boat harbour, night-clubs, bars and casino. It also boasts a golf course. You will be able to find a wide range of activities: diving, yachting, trip boats, underwater viewing cruises etc. For a quieter beach, head for Grau d`Agde. This is a typical French seaside town, alongside the river Herault's sea port entrance. For the more adventurous, the largest naturist quarter in Europe is close by.

In the region

With Agde as a base it is possible to discover more of this fascinating part of France. The Etang de Thau is home to hundreds of flamingos. It is also a famous oyster farm and a great favourite amongst boaters. The wine and food tour is a signposted drive around the best of the gourmet delights the region has to offer. If you travel further east you go through the wild Camarge country with lagoons and wild horses onto the Roman town of Nimes and its magnificent aqueduct or the medieval walled city of Aigues-Morts. Travelling north from Agde you can pass through Moliere`s adopted town of Peznas. Continue on into the black mountains where there are gorges, lakes, wild boar and truffles. To the west is the land of the mysterious Cathars, wild rocks with impossible looking castles, the beautiful cities of Narbonne and Carcassone.
