Airport aims to attract 10m passengers

Flight and travel info: 16 April 2008

An airport in the UK has indicated that it is on track to break the ten million passenger mark this year.

According to Birmingham International Airport (BIA), the number of people passing through its doors in March was 8.4 per cent higher than it had been 12 months before.

The overall number of air passengers for March - just over 730,000 - was the highest figure on record for this time of year.

Peter Vella, business development director at BIA, praised this achievement as it comes hot on the heels of a similar success in February.

He commented: "It is the second straight month of record-breaking passenger figures for the airport, which is great news as we strive to break the ten million passenger barrier this year."

Spain was highlighted as a particularly popular destination for leisure travellers at BIA, along with Portugal, Switzerland and France.

This comes just after Robin Hood Airport in South Yorkshire reported that passenger numbers in March 2008 were 12.6 per cent up on the same period of the previous year.
