Cyprus benefits from early Easter
Cyprus: 21 April 2008This year's early Easter helped to boost last month's visitor numbers in Cyprus, according to new figures.
Official data cited by the Financial Mirror revealed that more than 108,000 enjoyed a holiday in the Mediterranean island in March.
This is 3.7 per cent up on the figure recorded 12 months earlier.
Analysts have attributed this increase to the early holiday season in 2008, as Easter Sunday fell on March 23rd this year.
This is the earliest calendar date it has fallen on in almost 100 years.
Cyprus was found to be especially popular with British holidaymakers during this period, as visitor numbers from the UK went up by 8.9 per cent on March 2007.
This is despite the declining value of the pound against the euro, which was adopted by Cyprus on New Year's Day 2008.
According to the statistics, more than half of the visitors to Cyprus last month hailed from the UK.
