France attracts European tourists

France: 13 June 2008

France is continuing to attract holidaymakers from across Europe, new figures have revealed.

Data from the French tourism ministry showed that almost 82 million foreign visitors arrived in the country last year, Reuters reports.

Nearly half of these were found to come from other European nations, including Germany, Belgium and the UK.

France was also said to be very popular with Swiss consumers, as well as people from Italy, Portugal and Spain.

The overall number of visitors from other countries in 2007 is four per cent up on the amount recorded a year earlier.

Commenting on the figures, the tourism ministry said: "Of the total 82 million arrivals, 14 million were in transit while 68 million were tourists whose final and main destination was France."

Many Britons have recently been drawn to the country since the introduction of a high-speed rail link between St Pancras station in London and Paris.

This has helped reduce the time it takes to travel from the UK to France to just two hours and 15 minutes.
