Trinidad, some seven miles off northeast Venezuela, was colonised by the Spanish, the French and the British, and this mix, together with the indigenous Amerindian people, the African slaves, the Indian indentured labourers, and significant communities of Chinese and Middle Eastern people make this the colourful and vibrant island it is today. Annually there are fourteen public holidays each year to celebrate and commemorate festivals and events such as Easter, Divali and Eid and Emancipation Day. There are also two unofficial public holidays for the main days of Carnival (the two days preceding Ash Wednesday) each year.
